Derek Witt

We are shocked and saddened to hear of the death of DH Cyclesport’s Derek Witt as the result of a collision with a car on the Itchen Bridge on 20th August.  Our condolences are extended to Derek’s family and to his colleagues at DHC.  Our best wishes are also sent to Derek’s team mate Pete Sneddon who was rushed to hospital after the incident and is described as being in a stable condition.

Well done Matt!

Congratulations to Matt Wyles for becoming our new hill climb champion!  Matt completed the ascent of Portchester Lane in a time of 3:05.6, beating former champion Rob Allen into second place by some 9 seconds.  As far as we can remember, this is the first time that Matt has raced in PNE colours for some 19 years.  What a way to make a comeback!

Welcome to Meridith Grimsley

Meridith has joined us just in time to ride the Hill Climb on 14 August 2008.  In doing so she is the third United States citizen to race in our colours in the last few years!

Change of club clothing design for 2009 racing season

The committee has unanimously decided that it is not in the interests of the club to change the design of the racing strip, including the red training tops, for at least the next eighteen months.  This decision has not been taken lightly and is entirely due to the large amount of club funds currently held as clothing stock.  Therefore any club member who is in need of new clothing is strongly encouraged to make contact with Paul Martin who has taken over from Keith Allison as Procurement Officer.

Welcome to Lewis Cockram and welcome back Adrian Barron

Lewis joined us just before the start of the Hantspol ‘10’ on 20 July 2008 and is now our youngest rider.  We hope to see more of him and wonder if he has inherited the considerable turn of speed his father, Alan has!  Adrian has rejoined us after an absence of some 20 years although he now lives in Preston, Lancashire.

Thanks to Des and Rita

Just a word of thanks to Team Axiom’s Des and Rita Ludford for timing our ‘15’ on 26 June.  Absence due to holidays meant that our usual stalwarts were not around to help Sheila Martin on that occasion and without Des and Rita’s help we might have had to cancel the event.  Sheila’s son, Paul is training to be a timekeeper (more thanks due to our friends in the Fareham Wheelers and the Hampshire Road Club) so here’s hoping we might one day be able to return the favour.

Welcome to Bob Dawson

Bob joined us in time for the 10M TT on 12 June 2008.  Coming from another local club, Bob showed his potential PNE credentials by deciding to ride the HRC (PTTL) 50M TT only the day before!  Anyone willing to undertake such a gruelling distance with little preparation deserves some credit – and is welcome to wear our red, white and blue!  Our welcome is extended to Bob’s wife Louise and their young son, Thomas.

Well done Jason, Paul and Rob

Well done to Jason Atherton, Paul Martin and Rob Allen for riding (and finishing) the HRC 22M Hilly TT on 10 June 2008.  Starting at the West Ashling ‘Scout Hut’, the course goes to Chichester Northgate and Lavant and then takes in the long climb from Chilgrove to the top of ‘long’ Harting.  After the descent it takes a vicious left straight up ‘short’ Harting (1 in 6) and then descends to finish outside Funtington via Walderton.  Thank you to the Hampshire Road Club for promoting such a ‘sporting’ course.  Let’s see more PNE riders next time!

Graham Penrose wins the Fareham Wheelers Hilly 14 Mile Time Trial! – 8 May 2008

Congratulations to Graham for beating off 18 other riders to win the race that covers half of the old Hants Road Club Hilly 39K TT.  On a very pleasant evening with just a gentle easterly breeze, Graham tackled Hyden Hill and Teglease Down in his usual steady understated style to beat 18 other riders.  No problems were encountered in East Meon village or on the descent to The Hurdles although the narrow lanes could not be described as a car-free zone.  The full result was:

Welcome back Matt Wyles!

We are pleased to welcome back Matt Wyles.  Winner of our prestigious Barnsdale Trophy in 1989, Matt went on to ride for the VC St Raphael and was featured on the front cover of Cycling Weekly contesting the sprint for 1st place in the 1992 Perfs Pedal road race.  More recently Matt has lived and raced in Australia.  Now back and living in Havant, it is to be noted that Matt has taken out PNE racing membership - so watch this space!

Welcome back Dave Swaffer!

We are glad to welcome Dave Swaffer back into the PNE fold.  Like fellow returnee Rob Allen, Dave is a former Best All Rounder champion which means he knows what it means to ride hard for 12 hours.  Dave was out around the Team Axiom ‘10’ last Saturday and it’s him we have to thank for some of the excellent photographs on these pages.  Dave has another thing in common with Rob – he has only taken out non-racing membership.  They both look pretty fit to us so we are wondering what persuasion will be needed to get them to upgrade their membership….?

P.S. Rob was a formidable hill climb champion in his day and rumour has it that he still dances on the pedals at the sight of something steep.  Could he be our secret weapon on 14th August?
